Human Resources: Recruitment and Hiring Process
One of the fundamental human resources tasks is recruiting and hiring employees for the company. Every company has a different method of recruiting and hiring potential employees; however, they all follow a similar process to finding the best candidate for the position.
Recruiting and hiring, and to different things, recruitment is a more broad term that includes hiring. Recruiting is simply assessing and gathering potential candidates. The purpose is to find, retain, and diversify the workplace. The pool of qualified unemployed graduates looking for a job is always growing. Moreover, competition between companies is as well, so finding the best person for the job can be a strategic process. The recruiting process can also happen inside the company, as well. To ensure to keep the best and the most talented employees and giving qualified people opportunities to take up new positions for growth. Recruitment also plays a role in making sure a company is diverse, with people of different backgrounds and expertise. Having a successful recruitment process can save the company time, resources, ensure consistency, and recruitment metrics. By having a predetermined process, the company, or more specifically, human resources, can spend less time determining the candidate for the position and more time on other things. With a successful recruitment process, it ensures a company is only using the needed amount of people for recruiting. They are allowing more people to work on other tasks. The consistency of recruiting is important; hiring managers will have standards for assessing applicants, which helps with equal opportunity and less bias. Lastly, the recruitment metrics is it one of the measurable aspects of human resources to see where to improve on and to measure success.
Hiring is deciding on who is the best candidate and offering them a position with a salary. The first step in the hiring process is finding a vacancy and evaluating the need. Vacancies can come up for numerous reasons, for example, termination, retirement, transfers, and temporary leave. Once there is a spot open, the company will need to analyze and determine the need to bring in more people to handle the responsibilities. The second step is creating a job description that outlines the skills, requirements, and qualifications for a particular job. Job descriptions should consist of the responsibilities, position summary, demands, and any working conditions there might be. Step three is developing a recruitment plan. It helps a company strategize to attract and hire the best fit for the position. Some recruitment plans might include timelines, advertising resources, and resume banks.
The next step is selecting a hiring committee. In order to prevent bias, the committee is usually made up of people across the board. This brings in different perspectives to help assess candidates’ strengths and weaknesses. The committee should also know the position and the department’s objectives ahead of time. The fifth step is to implement a recruitment plan. Once the job description has been finalized, it should be posted on numerous job recruiting sites. After a minimum number of days, the applications should be reviewed by the committee. The sixth step is just reviewing the applications and shortlisting the potential applicants by qualifications, skills, etc., who will then be moved on to the interview stage of the hiring process. The seventh and final step is conducting interviews and hiring; the applicant may have to have a video or in-person interview. The hiring team will have various questions for the candidates relating to the position. Once interviews are completed the hiring committee will use evaluation tools to select the best-suited candidate
The recruitment and hiring process can be a lengthy task, but by planning, it is much easier to navigate the process. This allows for ways to optimize the operation to benefit the applicant and the hiring team.
